It is the chronological moment when a minor ceases to legally be considered a child and assumes control over their persons, actions and decisions, thereby terminating the legal control and legal responsibilities of their parents or guardian over and for them. The word majority here refers to having greater years and being of full age; it is opposed to minority, the state of being a minor. The law states that any contract signed by a minor is void , If the other person knows you are a minor from the beginning. But that doesn't mean you are free from a lawsuit or criminal charges for fraud if you are the one cheating. In some jusrisdictions you have to be 21 to sign a contract. As for the car salesman, he is not going to "assume" your age, he is going to ask for proof. If you give false ID and counterfeit documents you could be arrested for fraud and car theft, also you will be sued along with your parents as legal guardians. Being a minor won't protect you against a civil lawsuit and some time in a juvenile prison if you commit fraud to "steal" a car. There is no quick answer to your question. Your question really has mulitple parts. The age of majority-- generally when you're considered to be an adult-- is different than the age of consent that applies to your ability to make decisions about participating in sexual activities. And even those two parts don't speak to the legality of firearm possession and legal consumption of alcohol. You ask why 18 and 21 are so common. Of course, that's a mixed question too.
